Black Soldier Fly Waste Management
Black Soldier Fly Waste Management
Section: Environmental Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Microengineering, Mechanical Engineering
Place: Bagamoyo, Tanzania
Start Date: Now
Duration: 3 months is ideal, but 2 months is also ok. 3-6 months is welcome, but visas must be negotiated differently.
Hosting Structure: The Baobab Home/Steven Tito Academy, We are a family style orphanage, an English medium primary school for bright children from poor families, set on a 12 acre farm with a lot of eco projects happening. We also have two HIV related programs in town, including a support group for HIV+ children.
Our school serves 145 children, and is growing. It is our aim to incorporate our eco projects into the curriculum of our school to create a “green school”. Our vision is to educate children now to be informed about the environment so that they will be good leaders in the future.
Project description: We are always striving to create innovative projects that make us more self-reliant and protect the environment. One of the most important considerations for reducing greenhouse emissions in the world is to better manage organic waste.
To that end, we have developed a small colony of Black Soldier Flies. We deposit all organic waste in their bin and they compost it naturally. We then use the larvae for fish and chicken feed, creating a closed loop system.
It’s going ok, but it is small, and the system has much room for improvement, in order to manage waste better, and increase production of larvae. BSF could even be used to create revenue. We have a business plan, but do not have the people to enact it.
The aim of the project will be to optimize the system that we already have. The system right now is quite complex, and it takes lot of time to do one full cycle. We would like to make the production faster and simpler.

Comments: Karibu Tanzania! (Welcome in Swahili) We welcome interns who are looking for a challenge and who really want to stretch their skills and put them to work for a good cause. Our farm is a fun place to be. The kids are very happy and welcoming. We can offer travel advice to other parts of Tanzania. For more information, just contact us.
We can put the student in contact with expert on BSF before the start of the project.
If the organization cannot provide accommodation to the intern, it must however support him/her in his/her research for one. It is crucial that the intern has a place to stay, even temporarily, from the day of his/her arrival (visa requirement).
Accomodation: Yes, but occasionally we are full for short periods. In this case we have tents and there are beach hotels not too far away that are inexpensive.
Meal: Yes. We recommend that people bring their own snacks for breakfast, just in case.
