The rapid advances in information technology are having a wide-ranging impact in the life of people around the world. Although these advances present significant challenges to society, these also offer unprecedented opportunities for people to connect, interact, innovate, and become active agents for positive social change within their communities. The You-i Lab aims to engage and empower youth through the use of ICTs and open innovation methodologies to develop projects for the public good in the Global South. The National Supercomputing Center (CNS) in San Luis Potosí hosts the You-i Lab, which is a state-of-the-art HPC research facility that focuses on the development of large-scale industrial projects. The CNS is managed by the Instituto Potosino de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (IPICYT), in México.

Project description: The New Urban Agenda published by the UN Organization in 2017 highlighted the unprecedented growth of cities on the planet. It is predicted that the population that inhabits urban areas will grow double by 2050. For this reason, the urbanization of the 21st century will be one of the significant trends that generate deeper transformations in socio-urban dynamics and will give rise to major challenges to maintain sustainability in cities (1). The Agenda looks for “substantially reducing the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water, and soil pollution and contamination” (Goal 3.9), and “reducing the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality” (Goal 11.6) (2). The seriousness of the air pollution problem in the world has shaped the World Health Organization (WHO) agenda to include: 1) actions for reducing the global epidemic of noncommunicable diseases and climatic change with air pollution reduction as a key pillar; 2) reach an agreement to develop a “Global Movement for Clean Air” with commitments by ministers, mayors, intergovernmental organizations and non-state actors for reaching air quality levels in line with WHO Air Quality Guidelines by 2030; and 3) updated evidence on health impacts of air pollution, acute episodes along with new tools for estimating impacts and related cost and benefits for improving air quality.
Required skills of Intern: Solving this challenge requires a multi-disciplinary working group of students, including at least two computer engineers:
Comments: Work will be conducted in the You-i Lab in San Luis Potosí. A space in the lab will be provided. Lab members will help our visitor to find accomodation, good places to eat and visit, and to understand how to move in the city. At this time, the You-i Lab cannot provide medical insurance or insurance against accidents. In the near future, the You-i Lab may be able to provide a stipend to our visitor.
